This article has been cited by other articles in PMC. Dr Joseph Juran is well known to most quality scholars. With a productive career spanning over three quarters of a century, his leadership and service in the field of quality management is measured in decades, not years.
He has taught or consulted in at least 34 countries. He has written or contributed to hundreds of papers, speeches and dozens of books. His books have been translated into 12 or more languages. Among other things, he has pushed the concepts of the Pareto principle and Juran trilogy, and has increased the role of the human dimension in quality.
He was born in Braila, Romania on 24 December His father was a shoemaker. At the age of 8 years, he and his family moved to Minneapolis, USA. His mother died from tuberculosis about 8 years later. He learnt from all his work experiences, but he also pursued a formal education in addition to his demanding work schedule. He married Sadie Shapiro in He later went on to obtain a law degree from Loyola University in , perhaps motivated by the economic uncertainty of the Depression.
There, he was influenced by Walter A Shewhart. Juran, Walter A Shewhart 3 and W Edwards Deming 4 are considered to be the three key founders of the quality improvement movement. From to , the Hawthorne plant was a remarkable place for its unique role in advancing the science of quality improvement, and for the studies by Elton Mayo on worker productivity. He helped give Chicago the tough reputation it holds to this day. Juran remembered reports of rival gang members driving down 22nd Street passing the Hawthorne buildings with guns blazing as they battled for criminal supremacy.
He taught industrial engineering as a professor and was department chairman at New York University from to Juran was active in creating, and is active in supporting the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, both directly as an individual and through the Juran Foundation. It was a newspaper article on the game of chess. He is passionate about writing and went on to publish hundreds of articles and papers, and more than 30 books.
Other contributions that will be recognisable to most quality scholars include the Pareto Chart and the Juran Trilogy. Juran called this the Pareto Principle. The Pareto Chart is basically a bar chart in which the bars are sorted so that the highest bar highest count of defects is on the left, the second highest bar is next, and so on, with the shortest bar on the far right.
The chart is used to prioritise problems or processes that require an input of resources to improve. Pareto charts often include a cumulative percentage line, which starts with the highest bar on the left and peaks to the right to show the cumulative percentage of all causes.
In this regard, the Juran Quality Trilogy provides a frame for linking finance and management to quality improvement.

Disaat yang besamaan nampaknya sangat urgen dalam upaya adanya peningkatan kualitas pendidikan untuk memberikan peningkatan mutu secara signifikan dalam pengembangan sumber daya manusia.
Joseph Juran: overcoming resistance to organisational change
As you all know, Juran is a management consultant and an Engineer, specialized in Quality management. Though the above three may sound similar, they have different objectives and serve different purposes of Quality Management. Let us have a look at these components one by one: Quality Planning: As with all management activities and processes, Quality journey begins with planning the activities that needs to be done to adhere to the Vision, Mission and Goals of the organization and to comply with customer and compliance requirements. For this purpose periodic checks and inspection has to be done, metrics need to be tracked, to ensure that the process is in control and meets specifications and the metrics need the set target. Wherever there is a defect a corrective and preventive action needs to be done, and root cause has to be arrived at. Also the deviation in the metrics and process audit results need to be monitored and corrected for meeting the required target as specified by the processes.

Juran’s Quality Trilogy
Joseph M. Juran in as a means to manage for quality. The traditional approach to quality at that time was based on quality control, but today, The Trilogy has become the basis for most quality management best practices around the world. This could be a new product, service, process, etc. As operations proceed, it soon becomes evident that delivery of our products is not percent defect free. Because there are hidden failures or periodic failures variation that require rework and redoing. In the diagram, more than 20 percent of the work must be redone due to failures.
