The calibration of each symbol is accomplished using an extremely high resolution reflection microdensitometer, is NIST Traceable for reflectance and linear dimensions, and Judge Certified. The calibration result of each symbol is recorded on the test card and on the accompanying Calibration Report. A statement of estimated uncertainty is documented on the Calibration Certificate. Both the Calibration Report and Certificate are included with each test card. In addition, each card has been further enhanced with a thicker and flatter backing material than previously provided on other cards.

The formal grade is formulated by taking the average of all of the individual line scan grades. Bars too light Edge Contrast measures the difference between adjacent bars and spaces. Irregularities Decodability grades the accuracy of bar and space widths compared to their ideal size.

A barcode with bar width growth or distortion will score a low decodability grade.
