HEALTH COUNSELING A MICROSKILLS APPROACH PDF

This update of a publication is intended to be more user friendly with clearer descriptions of counseling techniques and theory. Purpose: The book strives to provide a unifying framework for health counseling for use by counselors, educators, and school nurses. Audience: Although the book is targeted for specific groups who might engage in health counseling, it seems to ignore the education and training that these professions have had. For example, all nurses engage in health counseling, not just school nurses. Patient education and health counseling are specifically addressed in nursing curriculums.

The book does present a unifying framework in detail, discussing how the microskills theory can be used in health counseling.

Features: Various theories that can form the basis for health counseling are introduced and legal and ethical issues that may arise in counseling scenarios are discussed.

The majority of the book applies the microskills model to health counseling with the goal of informing professionals how to help clients work through emotions associated with health issues and engage clients in best practices to improve health. Other chapters discuss specific application of the microskills theory in various situations with specific health conditions.

Chapters also focus on primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention. The most effective section illustrates how the microskills model can be applied to health counseling.

It uses scenarios and discusses specific examples that are very helpful in demonstrating how the model works. It is not clear why school nurses are one of the professional groups identified and other nursing specialties are not. For example, community health, hospice, and mental health are all areas where nurses engage in health counseling.

The book also makes a distinction between licensed counselors and counselors who are not licensed. This section is confusing and does not address nursing licensure, noting that those without a license to counsel should proceed with caution. Assessment: The focus on the microskills approach to health counseling is valuable and has benefit for any professional engaging in it.

Disease management is important for a variety of chronic diseases and helping individuals both deal with the emotions associated with an illness and engage in health management requires a clear framework.

This book does effectively provide that framework, but the narrow prescription that the book is for counselors, educators, and school nurses limits its appeal.
