La meiosis es un proceso que consiste en dos divisiones nucleares seguidas cuyo resultado final es de cuatro clulas hijas, cada ncleo nuevo o hijo tiene la mitad del nmero de cromosomas de su clula creadora adems de solo recibir un miembro de cada par de cromosomas homlogos. Este proceso consigue mantener equilibrado el nmero de cromosomas de las clulas de la especie para conservar la informacin gentica, es por eso que los errores en la meiosis son los principales responsables de las numerosas anomalas cromosmicas. Durante la meiosis debe ocurrir una adecuada separacin de los cromosomas. Sin embargo, pueden presentarse ciertas anomalas; una de estas es la no disyuncin meiotica. Esta anomala aparece cuando los cromosomas homlogos no se separan durante la meiosis I o cuando las cromatides hermanas en la meiosis II no se apartan. Al presentarse estas situaciones se generar un fenmeno conocido como aneuploidia, lo que quiere decir que la clula resultante presentar un nmero anormal de cromosomas.
