However, Kenneth Good in Diamonds, Dispossession and Democracy in Botswana argues that these traditional interpretations mask the realities of the situation.

In this meticulously researched monograph, Good sets out to challenge this ahistorical notion and paints a very different picture of Botswana. Split in to five main sections, the book investigates diamond production, the power of the president, the predominance of one party rule, the social weaknesses in the country and the subordination of the San people.

He illustrates how diamond production has helped to foster a nation entirely dependent on diamonds for its revenue and Good highlights the ways in which this situation has both created and masked the inequalities in the country. The rich have used diamonds to secure economic and political powers, which has resulted in high levels of government corruption to the detriment of the majority of the population. Political opposition is ineffectual, and the BDP has been increasingly intolerant of criticism to its governance.

This point is neatly encapsulated by the fact that Good was expelled for his criticisms of Botswana by presidential decree. This book is a welcome addition to the literature and serves as a timely warning to the international community that they need to look beyond the triumphalism of headlines to unearth the truth. Good delves into the realities of the situation in Botswana, publicising facts that the BDP would rather not be revealed. However, the book is not just critical, and Good concludes by offering positive suggestions on how Botswana can reform itself.

Share on mail On 31 May , a frail Kenneth Good was deported from Botswana, where he had worked for 15 years as a university lecturer in politics. Expelled from Rhodesia in for criticising its white minority rule, Good was popular with students, always encouraging very free and frank political debate. Details of the debate quickly spread over the internet. Three emergency High Court hearings later, Good was declared a prohibited immigrant on the grounds of public interest. Good was given minutes to grab some clothes and say goodbye to his teenage daughter before being deported.
