AULEN CHRISTUS VICTOR PDF

The Orthodox Church still holds to the atonement view, based upon their understanding of the atonement put forward by Irenaeus, called " recapitulation ", Jesus became what we are so that we could become what he is. He does this by satisfying the demands of the Law for a sinless life and by suffering the wrath of the Father for past sins. Packer has notably argued for a version of satisfaction theory with less legal emphasis. In their view, the "divine opposition" is only apparent since the Father desires reconciliation with mankind and Jesus willingly offers himself as a penal substitute. Instead by suffering a death that, before the Law, meant an accursed status, Christ, instead of satisfying an obligation, overthrew the power of the Law, since its condemnation of a perfect man was unjust. Denny Weaver, in his book The Nonviolent Atonement and again recently in his essay "The Nonviolent Atonement: Human Violence, Discipleship and God", traces the further development of the Christus Victor theory or as he calls it "Narrative Christus Victor" into the liberation theology of South America, as well as feminist and black theologies of liberation.

God is fully aware that the Law puts us into a bind, legally speaking. Paul, who was himself an expert in the Law, explains that the Law exists to show us that we are sinful Romans —12; He calls the Law holy, righteous, and good Romans God upholds justice because He is perfect 1 John He also knows that we cannot attain perfection and that we will violate justice, because it is in our nature to do so Romans — Christus Victor sees the penal substitution theory of the atonement as violent and unpleasant.

However, the doctrine of propitiation is biblical, and the Bible does say that Christ took our punishment upon Himself. He became a curse for us Galatians , and He was made sin on our behalf 2 Corinthians

Apr 14, Ryan Dufoe rated it really liked it I gave it a 4 as a classic within the history of the church and NOT as a free-standing work. I think much better anthologies of thought on atonement theory have been written, but the importance this book has in bringing the Christus Victor view back into the conversation is part of the reason why the other books are so good. I appreciated the read among my other readings in the field for what it was. Aug 04, Jacob Aitken added it Triumphing over the powers, July 15, This book provides an historically-faithful alternative to the substitutionary and exemplary models of the atonement. Its strength lies in its presentation of a vivid and robust picture of the work of Christ.
